Italian cooking the way it is done at home, only slower

Hand-rolled pasta, wood-fired Neapolitan pizza, whole fish from the Wharf and a cellar of small Italian estates — on Columbus Avenue, in the neighborhood where San Francisco’s Italian story began.

The House

We do not have a concept. We have a nonna from Bologna, a pizzaiolo from Naples, and a fish delivery at six every morning.

Vitto Official opened in North Beach to cook the food of three Italian regions properly, without shortcuts. The pasta is rolled by hand every afternoon. The pizza dough rests for two days. The fish is whatever came off the boats at Fisherman’s Wharf that morning. The wine list is long because Italy has a lot of wine worth drinking.

The room is candlelit, the tables are linen, and the pace is Italian: nobody will bring the check until you ask for it.

The Menu

Three regions, one kitchen

I.

Emilia-Romagna

Egg pasta and long braises: tagliatelle al ragù, tortelli, lasagna della nonna. Rich, patient, comforting.

II.

Campania

Neapolitan pizza from the oak oven, San Marzano tomatoes, buffalo mozzarella, fritto misto. Bright and fast.

III.

Tuscany & Liguria

Fiorentina steak for two, whole roasted branzino, pesto by mortar, Chianti and Vermentino by the glass.

An Evening at Vitto

How dinner unfolds

On arrival

Aperitivo

A Negroni or a glass of Prosecco at the marble bar while your table is set. Focaccia and olives arrive without asking.

First course

Antipasti & Primi

Burrata and salumi to share, then the pasta — the reason most guests come back. Two primi between two people is the Italian way.

Second course

Secondi

Whole fish carved at the table, or the Fiorentina for two, rested and sliced on the board. Vegetables come as they should: simply.

To finish

Dolci & Digestivo

Tiramisù made this morning, an espresso, and a glass of amaro or grappa on the house for first-time guests.

In our guests’ words

The tagliatelle al ragù is the best I have eaten outside Bologna, and I say that having eaten a lot of it in Bologna.

Marco B. · Russian Hill

We came for the 70% welcome offer half-expecting a catch. There was none. The branzino, the Chianti, the tiramisù — we booked again before leaving.

Elena R. · Oakland

A real Neapolitan pizza in North Beach. Leopard-spotted crust, proper San Marzano, and a pizzaiolo who actually is from Naples.

David K. · Marina District

Our anniversary dinner: candlelight, a corner table, the Fiorentina for two, and nobody rushed us out. Exactly what we hoped for.
